Auditions are Thursday, May 7 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. or Sat May 9 from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Current SYSO players are not required to reaudition but may if they would like to do so.

• Auditions are in person with a video submission prior. There are four steps.
  • 1. Register here.
  • 2. Signup for a live audition slot here.
  • 3. Submit your You Tube video clip here.
  • 4. Prepare materials below (scales and excerpt) for your live audition. There will be sightreading at your live audition as well.
• *** Percussionists, we will send you separate instructions for steps 3 and 4

For your submitted video, please submit:

• Two passages of your choice. One fast solo passage that demonstrates technical facility and range, and one slow passage that demonstrates lyricism.

For the live audition, please prepare:

• Two Scales, quarter = 120, 3-octaves (except bass) separate bows or slur two

  • Violins: D major, C melodic minor
  • Viola: G major, D melodic minor
  • Cello: G major, D melodic minor
  • Bass: 2 octave, into THUMB position (without an octave drop).  D Major, C melodic minor
  • Winds and Brass: one major, one melodic minor scale

• Prepared Excerpts
  • String Audition Music
    • Students should prepare the ILMEA State Excerpt for District Auditions (Set D—Beethoven)
    • They should also prepare the excerpt marked in RED from Leonore Overture No. 3 by Beethoven, located in the "String Parts" Drive folder
  • Wind Audition Music
    • Students should prepare the ILMEA Etude Cycle 2 TECHNICAL ETUDE ONLY
    • They should also prepare the excerpt(s) marked in RED from Leonore Overture No. 3 by Beethoven, located in the "Wind Parts" Drive folder

All SYO members participate in their school orchestra or band programs where available.

Orchestra placement is at the discretion of the directors.
